Big Sky Mountain are a seven-piece all-female band from Sydney who released their debut album, All Our Minutes, in 2019 and then went on to play at several festivals, including making their Tamworth Country Music Festival debut in 2020. During the enforced time not playing shows over the past year or so, the band went into the studio with producer Jackson Barclay (The McClymonts, Vera Blue), and the first single to result from that association is the uplifting, smile-inducing ‘Bed of Roses’.

While Big Sky Mountain has seven members – one of them playing trumpet, which is not something heard on many country music tracks – their sound is not crowded. Instead, the instruments and vocals, including their glorious harmonies, are given respect and space. The result is a sound that is crisp and also warm, which befits the theme of the song: life isn’t a bed of roses but there is always the chance to take new chances, if you’re prepared to not dwell on the past.

The multi-voice harmonies are what’s most immediately appealing about this song, because those voices work so well together, but the song is also a good one to remember for a rainy day – when the rain is within you. It will make the sun come out, and leave you feeling better for having heard it, possibly several times over.
