Wren Bellette, formerly of Adelaide band The Heggarties, sets sail under her own name with the stunning, soulful sound of ‘Woman’, the first taste of her debut solo album (co-produced by Taasha Coates of The Audreys), due in 2024.
With the sound of anticipation as a needle navigates the grooves of a vinyl record, so begins ‘Woman‘ – the stunning first single and opening track on Wren Bellette‘s debut solo album of Australian Americana.
Languid, swooning guitar chords are draped across a country soul rhythm section as an elegiac electric guitar winds through the music and Wren dissects a damaged friendship and reveals the painful truth behind it.
“It’s about calling out someone on their bullshit,” explains Wren. “About a friendship that ended up being damaging to me and saying to them ‘I see through you, I don’t buy your excuses or justifications because I actually know you and I know why you did what you did to me, even if you won’t admit that to yourself’.”
It’s Wren’s voice that takes centrestage on the song. Compelling, deeply soulful and possessing an innate ability to convey the pain, sorrow and resilience generated by the song’s subject matter.
