The city of Newcastle, New South Wales, has contributed quite a bit to Australian music (a little band called Silverchair comes first to mind) and the nearby area of the Central Coast is home to many great Australian country music artists. Newcastle country/Americana band Whistle Dixie have, therefore, grown from fertile musical soil. Formed in 2015, they’ve appeared on bills with acts such as Diesel, Troy Cassar-Daley and Karise Eden. They were finalists in the 2017 Toyota Country Music Busking Championships and will take their live act to this year’s Deni Ute Muster, Gympie Music Muster, Burning of the Barrel and the Groundwater Country Music Festival.
Their new single, ‘Wildfire’, is taken from their forthcoming album. The beautiful harmonies and gentle beat seem to belie the serious tone of the lyrics, yet also make it more likely that the listener will pay attention to this song that tells the story of emerging from adversity with strength and determination, and of realising that sometimes you don’t know how much you love something until you have to fight for it.
