Aly Cook is a New Zealand artist but she has spent a lot of time in Australia too. For her album Caught in the Middle she enlisted some of Australia’s best musicians, including James Gillard, George Washingmachine and the late Glen Hannah, and recorded it at Asquith Studios in Sydney.
The latest single from the album is a cover of John Prine’s ‘Angel from Montgomery’. Says Cook: ‘I was so sad to hear that Covid had taken the life of one of my favourite songwriters. This was the song I got to choose for the Asquith Session. So cleverly written about how a woman is feeling, but written by a man from a woman’s perspective. John Prine was a genius songwriter!’
Cook has a great soulful voice that clearly connects with the meaning of the material – the track is a fitting tribute to the late Prine, and no doubt another chart-favourite single to go with #1 Country chart single ‘Red Dirt Road’ and the album’s closing track, ‘Cold Wind’, which reached the top 10.
