Australians tend to have a habit of claiming musicians and actors from Aotearoa New Zealand as our own, often because those artists have lived here or migrated here. If Neil Finn hadn’t moved home we’d be saying Crowded House is ‘our’ Crowded House. In the case of Jenny Mitchell, who grew up on the South Island and now lives on the North, it would be really, really great to claim her as our own because her music is, simply, magnificent. Magic runs through Mitchell’s veins and she weaves spells over listeners, whether they see her live or listen to a recording, and never is that more obvious than on her latest album, Tug of War. It is her third long player and we had a chat about it recently. You can watch that chat on YouTube or listen on Soundcloud.
