Hillsborough is an alt-country band from Brisbane/Meanjin, Queensland. The band formed in 2016 with core members Phil Usher and Beata Maglai, with the addition of Robbie Zawada on bass and Jonathan Pickvance on drums.
Hillsborough’s debut album, Comin’ Back for You, was released last year. The latest single is ‘Stitches’, which is having its online premiere here today. It’s the cool anthem for a late night or long drive, with Usher’s lead and Maglai’s backing vocals melding and contrasting over a driving beat which sounds like time marching on – reflecting the ‘stitch in time’ motif of the song.
‘Stitches is one of those songs where the main riff had been banging around my head for quite a few years,’ explains Usher. ‘It took some time to sit with it and see where it needed to go as a song, but it always kept coming back to me which is usually a good sign. The lyrics touch on the idea of making a fresh start and trying to look forward to what’s ahead rather than dwelling on the past. When I wrote it, I had no idea how hard it would be to sing and perform until we were in the studio. I’m hoping it sounds easy to the listener, but it’s definitely up there with the most difficult ones I’ve ever written. It’s a real workout for the lungs!’
