Sydney-based artist Harvey Russell released his debut album, Liquid Damage, in 2019. He is now gearing up for the release of his second, and this time it will be on Heartland Music Australia, the label newly established by Matt Ward. The first single from the album, ‘Honey Come Back to Me’, was released in the middle of last year and now there is a second, ‘Last Dance’, and it is having its premiere here today.

‘Last Dance’ is a tale from a late night in a bar or pub, with the protagonist trying to get up the courage to ask someone for a last drink and a last dance. But the idea itself is bittersweet, because it could end up being a request just for the last dance of the night (with the promise of more to come) or the last ever dance for the pair, and like Schrödinger’s cat it is both – until the dance is had. We know which the protagonist would like it to be … but you’ll have to listen to the song to find out what happens.
Russell’s voice is full of the courage and nerve implicit in the situation, but also a calm steadiness which suggests everything will be all right. He is backed on the track by a top-class band that includes Michael Carpenter and Luke Moller, bringing some wistful swing to this tale of late-night hopefulness.
