Hailing from Cronulla in New South Wales – a place renowned for its beautiful surf beaches – GS Ward’s new single ‘Every Song I Sing I Leave Behind’ evokes the hypnotic pattern of waves both in the production of the song and its title/chorus: every wave that is surfed is left behind, just as every song he sings is left behind. And indeed Ward is a surfer, and has been for decades.

‘Every Song I Sing I Leave Behind’ was written in 1972, back when Ward was chasing waves and also when he was already a musician. There’s nothing dated about it, though, with its theme of permanent impermanence that points to the cycle of life/earth/water and – as named in the song – planets too.

While it’s taken a while for Ward to record his songs, since starting the process he has not wasted time, releasing EP The Dark Room and subsequent standalone singles ‘Industrial Waste’, ‘Cronulla St’ and ‘Honey’. Moreover, he has an album, Incommunicado, due for release on 14 June this year.

Ward worked with producer/mixer Marc Scully (Omegaman, Alannah Russack, Pete Campbell) and ‘Every Song I Sing I Leave Behind’ features the breezy, honey-toned vocals of Kim Girdlestone. And it is having its premiere here today.
