Hailing from the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Rusty Pickups are a four-piece band that evolved from a honky-tonk outfit to the more bluegrass-influenced band they are today (and I chatted to band member Michael ‘Cookie’ Cook about that). Last year they released the EP Rattle in My Heart; this year they were a feature at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, playing 13 shows.
After they recorded the EP they decided to make their own studio, and thus Possum Stewdios was born. It’s where they recorded their latest single, ‘Goddamn Sunday’, which is about what happens when you’ve had a particularly good Saturday night … It was written by the band’s piano/keys player Waylon Katz – Cookie and Katz are joined in Rusty Pickups by Lee ‘Gun Belt’ Fielding (banjo) and Ayden ‘The Rambler’ Roberts (double bass) – and while it has a slower tempo than the songs on Rattle in My Heart, it’s in keeping with the good, honest storytelling that was found there.
The video for ‘Goddamn Sunday’, which is having its premiere here today (watch below), shows us what a goddamn Sunday may look like for the band as they prepare to play a show. The camera moves around the band members as they appear to deal with effects of the night before, then pull it together in the service of the show – for no matter what Saturday night brings, that show must go on. Speaking of … you can catch Rusty Pickups live in New South Wales and Queensland over the next few weeks – scroll down for dates.
