Victorian group Dead Beat Daddios are a loose collective of Melbourne roots and country musicians anchored by Hugh Martin and Jim Carden who have a new album, Further Away, set for release on 20 September, which will feature their previous single ‘Stonehaven Road’. Their new single is ‘Toast of the Town’ and it is having its premiere here today.
Written by Martin, it’s the tale of a couple from a small town, each with different ambitions but love between them, who are separated by a solemn circumstance (no spoilers – you’ll have to listen to the song to find out the full story). The song depicts the hopefulness of youth while also being pragmatic about the realities of life.
‘This song tells the story of a young couple who had everything going for them,’ says Martin. ‘But life sometimes sends you down a different road from the one you thought you were on and that’s what happens to Tracy and Shane.’
‘Toast of the Town’ also features vocals from Martin’s sister Emilie Martin, and the effect of having two singers is to give the story the sense of having being witnessed and remembered by others – almost like a tale that has been handed down and retold, not so much cautionary as carefully nostalgic.
