Melbourne country/folk band Team Love released their debut self-titled album in September 2020 (and I spoke to them about it not long afterwards). Their entrancing harmonies were married with bold lyrics, making for a very satisfying listening experience.
The six-piece outfit – with members Ruby McGrath-Lester (vocals/guitar), Ruby Cattell (violin/vocals), Monique Bricknell (keys/vocals), Shaun Stolk (guitar/vocals), Paddy McGrath (drums) and more recently Tom Thomas (bass) – are now back with a new single, ‘Winter’, which is having its premiere here today, and they are working towards an album next year.

‘It’s a lil’ bit rocky, it’s a lil’ bit country and 100% Team Lovey!’ says McGrath-Lester. ‘We recorded “Winter” in Melbourne and in Coomoora, which is just outside of Daylesford where Monique, Paddy and I grew up (Tom grew up in Daylesford too, he was a town kid).’
Although McGrath-Lester sings of winter coming ‘because I’m here without you’, there’s such richness in the voices that harmonise with her in the chorus that winter doesn’t seem so bleak – and that may be the subliminal message of Team Love’s music (and band name) in general: there’s power in the group, and everything can be managed when you have the right people around you.
