There are persuasive reasons to see Felicity Urquhart and Josh Cunningham live, and they start with the standard of music. Which is very, very high.

Well before she met Josh Cunningham, Felicity Urquhart had solo releases and a couple of albums with Lyn Bowtell and Kevin Bennett, as Bennett Bowtell & Urquhart. Recorded, her voice is this perfect crystalline jewel of an instrument that is right on the note and also feels like it encompasses whole worlds, and any time I saw her play live I would marvel at that voice and how it could break a heart and be as strong as steel at this same time. Which could be a very short – and definitely incomplete – assessment of her songwriting too. Then there is Felicity’s prowess on and affinity for a variety of instruments …

Josh is a founding member of The Waifs, who are still going strong, playing festivals and shows. His music with Felicity is quite different, and it has been clear from the start – and they are honing in on album number three now – that they know how to combine their strengths as individual artists in a way that brings out the best in each, and in their joint enterprise. As a guitarist live, Josh is a joy to watch, because he always looks like he’s having fun, almost surprising himself sometimes with what emerges from his instruments.

Felicity and Josh released a song called ‘Joy Roller’ a little while ago and they played it live last night at The Beer Shed in Leumeah, NSW. At the time it was released I thought it an apt description of what they are and do, and last night that was made manifest once more. Felicity Urquhuart and Josh Cunningham are in the joy-bringing game: to each other, and to audiences. That’s another of the very persuasive reasons to see them live. The rest you will have to find out for yourself, and I hope you do, as they are on tour.
