Piper Butcher is a singer-songwriter from Newcastle, NSW/Awabakal land whose debut single, ‘Haunting Your Thoughts’, carries a promise in its title – because, given the power of her performance in it, she’s likely to be haunting listeners’ thoughts, in a good way.

The song developed from an idea formulated by Butcher and 2020-21 Toyota Star Maker winner Sammy White: what happens when a troublemaker doesn’t clean up their mess? Butcher’s voice soars above a full-band country rock track, which is the sort of backing she needs, as this is not an artist who’s going to sit quietly in the corner. Nor should she: by the age of 16 she’d played support slots for Diesel, Thirsty Merc, Kasey Chambers, The Black Sorrows, Glenn Shorrock, Tori Forsyth and William Crighton, performing at venues in the Hunter region. Her first gig took place when she was eleven, at an open mic night at The Hood Milk Bar in The Junction, where she was joined on stage by singer-songwriter Harry Hookey, who played harmonica. While Butcher is still in her teens those early musical experiences have clearly helped form her confident, dynamic sound – with hopefully more singles to follow soon.
