The first single released from the upcoming album from Blue Mountains, NSW/Dharug country duo Eagle & the Wolf was the upbeat and uptempo ‘Something Good’ a great way of saying hello to old and new fans. That album, Two Lovers, will be released on 17 September (pre-orders here) and the pair have now released the rapturous second single, ‘Currawong’. A tribute to their local fauna and landscape, it is captivating from the start, with Sarah Humphreys’s vocals anchored by those of Kristen Lee Morris, then it builds through each chorus to a glorious finale.

Says Humphreys of the song’s genesis, ‘I was walking through the bush near our house in the Blue Mountains and a song came to me, almost like it fell out of the sky. It felt like a gift from this special place. As songwriters, we live for those moments. Where the spark turns into a fire and a beautiful song is written with ease, all we have to do is be still, listen and try to catch it all.

‘We live near a waterhole which is sacred to the Dharug and Gundungarra people, it’s a peaceful place and I walk that track a lot. I say hello to my favourite gum trees as I walk our littlest baby in her pouch when she needs a sleep. I sang the song all the way home and showed it to Kris and he had tears in his eyes, he loved it. It didn’t feel like anything I’d written before, it has a quiet kind of magic to it.’

While Humphreys may think the magic is quiet, it’s actually loud and powerful. This is a special song and a balm to the soul.
