Some songs are irresistible, partly because you want to jump inside them and have them be your anthem. This is more likely to happen when the song has the perfect marriage of lyrical content and vocal performance, where the singer sounds like there’s nothing more they’d like than to sing this particular song. And so it is with ‘Free’, the new single from Ōtautahi, NZ singer Lee Martin, which is having its premiere here today and is taken from Martin’s forthcoming third album, Dreamers Dawn.
‘”Free” is about embracing the courage to step out of your comfort zone and discovering your true self,’ says Martin. ‘It’s a celebration of independence and personal growth. When I grew up I was raised with a very specific view on the world and always felt like I had no option to ever deviate from that. “Free” came to me at a time when I felt like I was truly becoming myself and realised who I really was and that I had a choice in my own beliefs.’
In her vocal on the song Martin shows us that freedom as well as singing about it – her voice has a joyous, open quality that makes it sound as if she was smiling in the studio (and perhaps she was). There is an exuberance to it as well, enhanced by the use of horns on the track, that makes the listener’s spirits soar, and ensures that you’ll want to return to this track again and again.
